Aled Williams
As a Player Aled’s formal introduction to brass banding came at the age of 12, when his uncle, René, suggested that he visit the Towyn Silver Band. It was here that his passion for brass music began to develop. During his early years, Aled played flugelhorn, baritone and euphonium, and also gained valuable experience performing occasionally with the Royal Oakeley Band under the direction of Bob Morgan. In 1989, Aled moved to Barrow-in-Furness to undertake an electrical apprenticeship, joining the Shipyard’s Championship Section band, Barrow Shipyard Band. Returning to Wales in 1993, Aled took up the euphonium with Royal Oakeley, conducted at the time by his former school peripatetic tutor, John Glyn Jones. He remained with the band until moving to Beaumaris Band in 1999. In 2002, Aled spent a year with Foden’s, joining the band to play alongside his brother, Glyn. He subsequently also performed with Marsden Silver Band and Aldbourne Band, both under Glyn’s direction. Aled has held the position of Solo Euphonium with Northop Silver Band for almost 20 years, establishing a long-standing association with one of Wales’ leading brass bands. As a Conductor and Educator Aled began his conducting career in 1994, when he became involved in the reformation of Abergynolwyn Band. Since then, he has conducted a wide range of ensembles, including Harlech, Northop Brass and Holywell, as well as numerous school and community project bands. Aled currently works with Royal Oakeley’s Band Bach, conducting the ensemble alongside members of the band and helping to encourage the next generation of young brass players. Alongside his performing and conducting commitments, Aled works as a peripatetic brass, guitar and bass tutor across Conwy, Denbighshire and Wrexham. He also runs his own electrical contracting business. Away from the brass band world, Aled continues to pursue his love of music as a bass guitarist, performing with various ensembles. “There is something very special about the Oakeley, its members and its followers. I am looking forward to the future challenges that the band will bring.”
