About Us

Founded in the shadow of the Oakeley Slate Quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Royal Oakeley Silver Band emerged from the industrial heartland of Snowdonia. In an era when slate was king and the quarries echoed with the rhythm of industry, the workers sought solace and expression in music. The band was born from this union of labour and melody — a community forged in stone and song.

For over a century, the band has been a cornerstone of Welsh brass band culture. From the chapels and halls of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the great competition stages of the National Eisteddfod and National Championships, our musicians have carried the sound of the quarry to audiences far and wide.

The band has competed at the highest levels of brass band contesting, including the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. Our members have travelled across Wales, England, and beyond, performing at concerts, festivals, and civic occasions. Each performance carries with it the weight of history — the sound of a community that has endured through boom and bust, through the decline of the quarries and the resilience of the Welsh spirit.

Today, the Royal Oakeley Silver Band continues to thrive as a living, breathing institution. Our rehearsal hall remains a gathering place where tradition is passed from one generation to the next. We welcome new members, young and old, who share our passion for brass band music. We perform regularly at concerts, contests, and community events throughout the year, and we are available for bookings — bringing the sound of Snowdonia's heritage to your special occasion.
